Parents - some frequently asked questions

How can I help my child at home?

·      Please show an interest in what your child has done and offer encouragement and praise.

·    Find time to play with your child.

·    Listen to and talk to your child and answer any questions.

·    Share the books that your child brings home to help develop reading skills and a love of books.

If you teach your child the alphabet, please teach them letter sounds (e.g. 'a' as in cat) and to write in small letters (not A) except for an initial capital letter for names.

Homework
We have a HomeworkPolicy which sets out our expectations of the sorts of things childrenshould be doing at home to support the work they do in school.

Homework should not get in the way of other out-of-school activities that children are doing.

How can I find out about my child?s work?

We will tell you which topics your child's class will be working on by sending home topic webs each half term.

We will also send out information, each half term, about the work on reading that is planned for yourchild.  We will suggest ways in which you can help your child?sreading at home.

If you want information about yourchild's work, or have any concerns, please don't hesitate to speak toyour child's teacher. She or he will nearly always be available for aquick chat after school.  If you want a longer time to talk, please make an appointment.

Most issues can be dealt with bythe class teachers.  If you wish to have an appointment to speakto the Headteacher, Andrew Wickham, you can arrange it with Josie inthe Office.

Parents' Evenings

There will be regular opportunities to discuss your child's progress with her/his teacher.

We hold Parents' Evenings twice ayear (in November and May) with timed appointments.  The Nurserywill be closed on these days so that appointments for Nursery parentscan also be offered during the day.

Additionally, early in the year wewill hold group meetings for all the parents of children in each classwith the class teachers.  This will give parents the opportunityto meet the teachers and to hear about plans for the year. Reception parents will be told how we teach reading.

Each summer you will receive awritten report covering the range of work done by your child.  Inthe Nursery we will give a verbal report.

Please tell your child's teacher ifthere are any changes in your child's life - e.g. a new baby, abereavement or family difficulties.  They can affect your child'swork and behaviour. If we know about them, we can respond appropriately.
